How to wash your hair – 10 tips for great hair

You might skip over this post, thinking this is too basic for you and that you are far more advanced with your hair care, but you may be making some simple mistakes.

Like riding a bike (something I only learnt last year!) I found most of my friends couldn’t explain how to start and stop. It’s easy to forget the correct way to do something when you are so used to it and have developed bad habits.

Everybody’s hair is different, but here are a few easy-to-follow tips to take better care of our tresses.

1. Don’t over-wash your hair.  Most people don’t need to wash their hair every day. If you do, it could be because you are using the wrong products for your hair and scalp type.

2. Only apply shampoo to your scalp and massage gently. Don’t pile your hair on top and scrub it, as this will only create knots. Work the shampoo gently down to the ends of your hair and rinse thoroughly.

3. Forget about lather, rinse and repeat. It’s just a brilliant marketing idea to make you use more shampoo. You only need to shampoo once.

4. But you really like that “clean” feeling when you wash your hair twice, right? If you use a lot of silicone or wax products, try washing with a clarifying shampoo once or twice a month instead of your normal shampoo.

5. Curly-haired girls, you may want to consider skipping the shampoo entirely. Sounds strange I know but curly hair is often very dry, and washing with conditioner alone will freshen your hair without drying it out. I cut out shampoo for 4 months and it definitely works. Unfortunately I colour my hair, use too much product and swim in the sea too often to maintain the cycle.

6. Ever have an itchy scalp after washing your hair? Stop applying conditioner to your roots. Start from the mid-lengths and really condition the ends of your hair. Gently comb through and allow it to work for at least a minute, the longer the better.

7. Rinse your hair in cold water. Make sure you remove all your conditioner and finish with cold water. This is a bitch in winter, so don’t go freezing yourself in icewater, but a cool rinse of water will close the cuticle and seal in the moisture to each strand. It’s ok to shampoo your hair in hot water but finish it with a cold rinse.

8. Never brush your hair when it’s wet. Instead use a wide comb to gently smooth your hair.

9. Ease off with the towel drying. Don’t rub your hair with a towel, you’ll only cause damage and make your hair look dull. Instead gently squeeze out the excess moisture and allow to air dry. In saying that, I only do this on the rare occasion I wash my hair on a weekday night or have nothing to do on a Sunday. Parlux is my best friend and dries my hair in no time at all.

10. Treatments – hair masks are essential if you use heat stylers or colour your hair. Even if you don’t you will still appreciate the moisture a mask brings.  Normally this is applied between shampoo and conditioner, so I either get out of the shower, have a cup of tea and catch up on blogs while I let it work, or get some chores done.

Do you use hair treatments? What type of hair do you have and what’s your favourite shampoo and conditioner?

Less stress for your hair – Original & Mineral

Last week I saw on Twitter that Original & Mineral were looking for hair models to test their brand new range of colour. I retweeted it but I wasn’t thinking of going along myself. But I changed my mind as it seemed to good an opportunity to pass up.

Original & Mineral is not your usual hair brand. They say

The root cause of bad hair days is stress so we’re calling time on the chemical overload.

I know we shouldn’t be using so many chemicals, but I don’t often seek out more ecological products. I tend to pick products that work best for me. Original & Mineral claim their ammonia free colour and low chemical products work just as well, if not better than conventional products. I wanted to find out for myself.
Original and Mineral will soon launch a new range of peroxide and ammonia free hair colour, and this is one of the final stages of product testing. They were looking to test on scalp and natural hair, and unfortunately all my natural hair is hidden under the blonde (shock, I know) so I wasn’t able to be in the test group for their new colours.
Since I was already in the chair, the lovely Alan at Atlantis Hair in Paddington  suggested I try the Clear Gloss colour treatment. It’s a clear colour, and works to lock in colour and moisture, treating your hair and protecting your colour at the same time. Plus is it leaves your hair super shiny and so it’s a great treatment even if you don’t colour your hair.
Here’s my hair before & after. Seriously a bad before but I’m very impressed with the after - very shiny and felt so soft.

Clear Gloss is a great for when you’re just getting a root touch up and it will give your hair a shiny lift. You could also book it in before getting a blowdry mid-colour as it really made my hair colour feel like new.
The Clear Gloss is painted onto the hair and left to process for 20 minutes. After washing my hair (best bit – the head massage – thanks Amy!) Jacqueline applied Atonic thickening spritz (also a heat protectant) and Frizzy Logic Shine Serum. The Frizzy Logic is made from cold pressed Argan Oil and smoothed my hair without an oily finish or weighing it down.
I was excited to see Atlantis Hair are also a Cloud Nine Salon so Jacqueline used the wide straightener to smooth my hair and add some gentle flicks. Yes, I feel my straightening addiction is coming back...

Original & Mineral is currently only available in selected salons in Australia and New Zealand but is planning to move into the US market. I’m really interested in their ‘Clean colour technology’ and would like to try their hair colours to see how they compare.
Do you use ammonia free colour? Are low chemical products important to you? What brands and products do you use?

Lalalalala!!!!!!! I love You

Source
I know Valentines Day was last month and White Day was yesterday but I can give my hair roses at anytime. Bet you didn't know that roses are good for your hair and skin? Roses are used to make lots of things including rose water which have great hair and beauty benefits. Let's see the hair benefits.

What is Rose water?
Source
Rose water is a fragrant solution extracted from rose petals.  Its aroma is slightly less powerful than rose essential oil (rose otto). Since rosewater is edible, cooks have taken advantage of the sweet signature that rose water adds to food and beverages.

Hair Care

Benefits
1) Natural moisturizer that can restore and replenish the moisture in your hair.
2) Repair sun damaged hair: After spending a long day at the beach in the sun, your hair becomes dry, sun damaged and thristy. Recondition your hair with rosewater to repair the damage done by the sun and saltwater.

Sun Damage Hair treatment
Mix rose water with vitamin E and jojoba oil.

Instructions
1) Massage the mixture into your wet hair and leave in for about 20 minutes.
2) Rinse the solution out of your hair and shampoo and condition as usual.

Results
Softer and shiny hair

NB: This rose water treatment also works well on hair heat- damaged from blow dryers, curling irons and other appliance that depletes your hair of it's moisture.

Rose water Spritz

Rose water spritz is a good everyday mixture to add moisture to your hair. This will not only leave your hair feel soft and moisturized but will also increase the blood supply to the scalp thus promoting hair growth.

Rose water Spritz recipe
4-8 oz of rose water
1/3 cup aloe vera gel
1/3 cup coconut and soybean oil  (adjust aloe and oils as needed)
a few drops of  rosemary oil
Instruction
Pour the ingredients i a spray bottle and shake well.
Spray the spritz on your hair before styling or before going to bed.

NB: Rose water helps to reduce inflammation of the scalp. You can add rose water to your shampoo for added results. You will be left with extremely soft, well conditioned, moisturized and great smelling hair.
Special thanks to Tamika for the post inspiration.  If you try any of the rose water recipes please let me know how it worked for you. Thank you for reading my blog. Please remember to leave your comments on the blog and subscribe to follow me.

Is your hair feeling the love?

Hair Romance is feeling the love at the moment!
Hits are off the charts here for Hair Romance, especially for my Sweet Twist and Pin Updo and The Twist and Pin Side Chignon and How to wear a headscarf like Blake Lively, and I am so excited. Thank you to all our lovely new followers on Facebook, Twitter and Google Friend connect. You can also add us to your reader with Feedburner here.
Don’t you always find that just as one part of your life gets busier, the other parts start to compete and everything goes crazy? Well, that’s kind of life around here at the moment. So much so I’m neglecting my hair! I am in serious need of some hair treatment.

One of my long time favourite treats is Redken All Soft Heavy Cream. It really does turn your hair all soft. After washing your hair, towel dry and apply this treatment. Leave for about five minutes and then rinse off to see your new shiny hair. The Redken All Soft shampoo and conditioner are also brilliant if your hair is dry or damaged.
My trick for a cheap hair treatment is just to leave your conditioner in for longer. Wash your hair and apply conditioner from the midlengths to the ends of your hair and leave in. I used to clip my hair up and cover in cling film and then get some chores done around the house. Rinse off, blowdry and style and you’re ready to go!

Recently I discovered a fabulous hair blog The Mane Loves... Kat focuses mainly on hair product reviews and is a font of knowledge. I asked her for her hair treatment tip and she recommends Andrew Collinge Salon Treatment. I noticed Andrew Collinge also does a Complete Moisture One Minute Wonder Treatment. A one minute treatment? Sounds like I might actually be able to fit that into my day. Off to the shops now...

Now do you have any hair treatments you can recommend? What’s your tip for saving neglected and tired hair?

Help!!!! You are killing me!!!!!

Our hair is a very important factor which helps in reflecting our beauty, personality and confidence. However, if proper care is not taken, the health and the condition of our hair may be deteriorated, which may spoil the condition of our entire hair. Here are a few things that contribute to the deterioration of our hair;

Poor Physical Condition

Not only is poor physical condition and heath a major reason behind heart disease, it causes chronic fatigue, low energy and other problems. Blah blah!! How does this relate to our hair? It has been proven that our hair benefits greatly from exercise and good circulation. Our hair is a barometer of our overall physical health. Think about it, if your body is not being well taken care of, what does your hair and skin look like?

Developing good a physical condition doesn't mean that you have to join a health club and work out 10 hours ever day. It just means to pay attention to your body and get some exercise for at least 20-30 minutes at least 3 times a week. More is better of course.

Erratic Sleeping Patterns
Improper sleep may be harmful for our hair and may result in hair loss. Due to extreme stress, we may not be able to sleep properly. This improper sleep pattern has a great impact on our health , and may also result in hair loss. It is very important for us to have adequate sleep every day, so as to prevent hair loss and maintain healthy hair. Are you getting your required amount of sleep? If not, maybe you need to visit your doctor. Besides helping your body to refuel and regenerate, sleep reduces stress levels, helps you relax and is a great hair tonic.

Unbalanced Diet
Not having a balanced diet may have harmful impacts on the growth of our hair. It is very important for your hair to get the required amounts of nutrition, so that it grows in a healthy manner. Having a fully nutritious diet, full of proteins and vitamins will provide your hair with the required level of nourishment needed. It is also important to drink plenty of water during the day, so that your hair remains hydrated and moisturized.

Excess Nicotine and Caffine
Too much nicotine and caffeine can also be disastrous for our hair. If you are a smoker, try to quit smoking or limit the number of times you smoke per day. Smoking is not only dangerous to our  health, but is also damages our hair.  It has been proven that smoking accelerates the incidence of hair loss and the accumulation of gray hair.
Also, foods containing caffeine should be taken in limited quantity to maintain the healthy growth of our hair.

If you are guilty of any of these practices, it may be difficult to stop or start doing the right thing suddenly. To achieve great results start little by little until you reach your desired goal. Good luck in the process.

Ask the Oracle

Follicle Oracle,

How happy am I that I found someone who can answer my questions. My hair has not grown in probably a year, it lifeless and has no real volume or movement and hangs just beneath my shoulders . It's pretty thin (my hairdressers and friends call it chicken fluff). I haven't really cut it, or had it trimmed in probably six months.

Is there something I can do to work towards healthy, longer hair?

Thank you!!

A
Hey A

Great question.

Using treatment shampoos can help and there are two different ways to go about it.

Most haircare ranges have a range for fine hair to promote body and volume. The shampoos tend to have less moisturisers and are more clarifying (to better remove natural oils which flatten the hair), while the conditioner is usually light so as not to weigh the hair down. They do usually leave the hair feeling a bit dry, which some people don't like.

Otherwise some ranges have specific treatment ranges. I know that one which I heard great things about when I used to sell it in the salon was a Lakme product, which is a Spanish brand.  The product was designed to help prevent thinning and clients felt their hair was a bit thicker and stronger. It was called LAKME K. Therapy Active Prevention Lotion.

I have seen successful new hair growth with Rogaine but it requires continual usage, so at least till the hair is of a decent length. I saw it on a male client after 3 months of use and there was definite new growth in the thinning areas but do not know what eventuated, whether he continued with Rogaine and whether the new growth held. Here's a link to a site with info on thinning hair products but one should really get a referral to a trichologist (hair specialist) before taking some of the products on the site.

Also this is a link to an Australian site: National Trichology Services which has articles and an online consultation service which might provide better answers than a hairdresser.

There is also the alternative of clip in hair extensions, which can clip in to give thickness, volume and length for the day or evening. The benefit being that they are removed at night and not slept in or worn in the shower so they don't damage the hair, but give the effect and feeling of thick hair. They are a bit more work but I know people who use them every day. They can be bought online from a number of different sites. They are real hair and can be styled and curled to suit hair types.

Good luck A and let us know if you have success with any of these products.

Hot Oil Treatment: Aye Aye Aye Aye!!!!!!!!

Over the weekend I did a hot oil treatment and have been seeing great results. My hair is radiant yet not greasy so, I'd like to share it with you.

Things you will need
Oils (I used olive oil, Castor oil  and tea tree oil)
Pot
Treatment cap
Zip lock bag
Towel

Benefits of the oils I used
Olive Oil
  • Olive oil is an effective treatment for hair loss, it also acts as a natural conditioner for the hair. In other words, applying olive oil on hair makes it shiny and soft.
  • The anti-fungal and antibacterial properties of olive oil is a great way of getting rid of the problem of dandruff.
Castor Oil
  • Castor oil promotes hair growth.  Regular application of Castor oil to your scalp and roots will help to eliminate dry hair and promote regrowth of your hair within months. It will also help to thicken hair that is thinning out.
  • Helps reduce and prevent damage.  Also can hide the appearance of damage while trying to improve your hair's health leading to thicker, fuller hair over time.
Tea Tree
  • Helps prevent dandruff.
  • Tea tree oil has a moisturizing component, which can improve the texture of dry or frizzy hair.
 Instruction
  • Place 2/3 cup of olive oil, Castor oil and tea tree oil in a resealable plastic bag and squeeze the bag to blend the ingredients.
  •    Fill the  pot with very hot water and put the plastic bag of hot oil treatment in the hot water. Leave it only until it's warm.
  • Make a small hole at one end of the bag and apply the hot oil treatment to your dry hair, working it through from the roots to the ends.
  • Put a treatment cap over your hair and cover with a warm towel.
  • Leave the hot oil treatment in the hair for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Shampoo out the hot oil treatment and condition your hair as usual. This step is optional. If you want to prevent your hair from being too oily. I didn't, I shampooed and conditioned my hair and then did the hot oil treatment.
This is my hair after the treatment.
Hope this helped. Thank you for reading and remember subscribe to follow me and leave your comments on the blog.

Deep conditioner love:Hair treatment from the Kitchen

This week I have been showing my hair lots of love. I did a detox and a deep conditioned my hair with ingredients from my kitchen. Yes you heard right. I like making this deep conditioner because its all natural, makes my hair feel extra soft and I know exactly what's in it.

    Ingredients

Mayonnaise, avocado, egg, honey, olive oil, aloe vera, Castor oil and rosemary oil.

    Things you will need
Towel, bowl (for mixing), treatment cap, basin, spoon and knife.

    Recipe
This is not set in stone, you may adjust to suit your need. If you want the conditioner to be thicker then you will need to use less aloe, more mayonnaise and maybe 2 avocado. Please note that you can eliminate some of the ingredients. I would say the key ingredients are egg, mayonnaise, avocado, honey, and the rosemary oil.

1 egg, 1 avocado the softer the better (depending on the length of your hair and the thickness of the conditioner), 4 to 5 tablespoon of mayonnaise, 4 to 5 tablespoon of honey, 2 tablespoon of olive oil, a piece of avocado, 2 tablespoon of Castor oil and 3 drops of rosemary oil (to remove the raw smell from the egg).

    Preparation
    1. Cut the avocado in half and remove the seed. Use a spoon to take out the inside. Put it in the bowl and mash if it is not over ripe.
    2. Add mayo and egg and mix all three together.
    3. Then, add honey, olive oil, Castor oil and aloe. To get the aloe from the skin, peel off the skin on one side and use  a knife to scrape the inside into the bowl. It will look slimy but it is okay.
    4. Finally, mix everything together.
The consistency of  the mixture should be thick.
You may make this in a blender to get it creamy but I think too much gets wasted so, I prefer making it by hand.

    Application
Section hair and apply mixture from root to tip.
I suggest doing this over a large basin as it can be a bit messy. When you have applied the mixture to your entire hair, put a treatment cap on for 30 to 40 minutes. You'll need to add a towel to prevent leakage.
To fasten the towel twirl until it gets tight and them tuck it under in the front.
    30 to 40 minutes after
Rinse with cold water, towel dry and twist, interlock or style as desired.

Hope this was useful. Thank you for reading and please remember to leave your comments and subscribe to follow my blog. Have a great weekend Barbies and Kens.

    Strip me: Hair Detox

My hair looks dull!!!!! I have so much build up!!!!!!!!! My hair is like an oil spill!!!!!! Will I ever get rid of all this stuff on my hair?
Don't worry there is an easy and inexpensive solution to your problem. It gets even better, you can do it in the comfort of your home.
The next thing you'll be asking is "what will I need and how do I do it?"

    Things you will need
Apple cider vinegar (sold in most supermarkets), spray bottle, towel, treatment (shower) cap, a bowl and 1 or 2 rubber bands.

    Preparation of your hair
You don't need to shampoo your hair but I usually start by giving mine 2 to 3 shampoos. Reason being, I want to make sure that I can get my hair as clean as possible so that the vinegar can take off as much of the build up.

How much vinegar do I need?
I can't tell you exactly how much you will need but try to estimate base on the length and the condition of your hair.

    Application
Pour the desired amount in the spray bottle and spray the vinegar on you hair.

You want to do his over a large bowl so that you can reuse the excess that drains from your hair. Once your entire hair is saturated with the vinegar, go ahead and put on the treatment (shower) cap over your hair. Add the towel around your head at the rim of the treatment cap and tighten using the rubber bands.

This will prevent the vinegar and build up from dripping all over you. You want to have the tie in the front as most of the vinegar will flow towards the back. Keep this in your hair for about 30 to 40 minutes depending on the condition of your hair.

    30 to 40 minutes after
Rinse with warm water. You'll need to shampoo again as the vinegar stench is very overpowering. After, you can go ahead and deep condition your hair or just add your regular conditioner.

How often should I do this?
Again the answer to this question is it depends on how much build up you have on your hair. If you have a lot where when you squeeze your hair you can see the oil coming out, you may need to do it once a month for 3 months.

I must point out that the way we care for and the things we use on locks are different from that of natural hair. Locks are a magnet for build up. Its just something that we cannot avoid but we want to make sure its not from the products we use but from things beyond our control. I'll say this Barbies and Kens "DON'T USE WAX ON YOUR LOCKS IT MAKE THEM LOOK WACK". So be careful what you put on your locks.

I hope this was helpful. Thank you for reading and please remember to subscribe to follow me and or leave your comments.
