Help!!!! You are killing me!!!!!

Our hair is a very important factor which helps in reflecting our beauty, personality and confidence. However, if proper care is not taken, the health and the condition of our hair may be deteriorated, which may spoil the condition of our entire hair. Here are a few things that contribute to the deterioration of our hair;

Poor Physical Condition

Not only is poor physical condition and heath a major reason behind heart disease, it causes chronic fatigue, low energy and other problems. Blah blah!! How does this relate to our hair? It has been proven that our hair benefits greatly from exercise and good circulation. Our hair is a barometer of our overall physical health. Think about it, if your body is not being well taken care of, what does your hair and skin look like?

Developing good a physical condition doesn't mean that you have to join a health club and work out 10 hours ever day. It just means to pay attention to your body and get some exercise for at least 20-30 minutes at least 3 times a week. More is better of course.

Erratic Sleeping Patterns
Improper sleep may be harmful for our hair and may result in hair loss. Due to extreme stress, we may not be able to sleep properly. This improper sleep pattern has a great impact on our health , and may also result in hair loss. It is very important for us to have adequate sleep every day, so as to prevent hair loss and maintain healthy hair. Are you getting your required amount of sleep? If not, maybe you need to visit your doctor. Besides helping your body to refuel and regenerate, sleep reduces stress levels, helps you relax and is a great hair tonic.

Unbalanced Diet
Not having a balanced diet may have harmful impacts on the growth of our hair. It is very important for your hair to get the required amounts of nutrition, so that it grows in a healthy manner. Having a fully nutritious diet, full of proteins and vitamins will provide your hair with the required level of nourishment needed. It is also important to drink plenty of water during the day, so that your hair remains hydrated and moisturized.

Excess Nicotine and Caffine
Too much nicotine and caffeine can also be disastrous for our hair. If you are a smoker, try to quit smoking or limit the number of times you smoke per day. Smoking is not only dangerous to our  health, but is also damages our hair.  It has been proven that smoking accelerates the incidence of hair loss and the accumulation of gray hair.
Also, foods containing caffeine should be taken in limited quantity to maintain the healthy growth of our hair.

If you are guilty of any of these practices, it may be difficult to stop or start doing the right thing suddenly. To achieve great results start little by little until you reach your desired goal. Good luck in the process.

Transitioning, hairstyles Please !!!!!!!!!

Transition Hairstyles
What hairstyles to rock may be the biggest challenge of all about going natural (besides the comments from your friend and co-workers).  How do you style your hair when it's very short or when some of it is nappy and the rest is straight.  There are several options.
Here are a few:

1) Big chop and rock a Tweeny Weeny Afro
2) Two strand or comb twist
Comb twist is quite simple yet effective.  If you decide to cut your hair, you can just use some styling gel (like Organic simulator Lock and twist Gel) and part your hair into sections.  Either twist on a comb or take two strands and twist them around each other.  Your hair can be worn like this for several days before having to re-style.
CAUTION:  Hair that is left twisted for too long can begin to lock.  So, unless you want locks, take it down every once in a while.

3) Braids or sisterlocks
SisterLocks can be started with as little as 1-1/2" of new growth at the scalp.

4) Straw Set
This is a great style if you want to keep your permed hair/ends.  The tight curls make the different textures (your roots and ends) less noticeable.

5) Crinkle Set or twist out
By braiding or twisting your hair using a setting gel, you can create a wavy/crinkly look that minimizes the different textures of your hair.  This is a very simple and cute style.  You can wear  your hair in twists or braids for a while, then remove them and wear the "twist out" look as shown in the photo above.

6) Flat Twists or Cornrow

Flat twists are basically the same as cornrows.  The difference is you use two strands of hair instead of three.

How to do flat twist
Things you will need:
Lock and twist gel, bobby pins and a comb.
Procedures
  1. Shampoo and condition your hair and towel dry.
  2.  Part your hair using a rat tail comb to make the parts clean and straight.
  3.  Put styling gel onto hair for greater hold.
  4.  Separate the section into 2 strands at the hairline.
  5. Wind one strand over the other, picking up hair as you move down the section.
  6. Secure the twist with a bobby pin placed parallel and underneath the twist.
  7. You can either twist right to the back of your head or leave hair out at the ends and roller set or straw set.
How To Do the Twist Out Look
Things you will need:
Setting lotion and Hair Oil (natural hair oils are best)
Procedures

  1. Wet hair
  2. Add oil
  3. Braid hair or twist it using the setting lotion
  4. You can wear the braids or twists for a day (or two or three)
  5. Remove the braids and leave the hair crinkly for a few days
  6. Wear a silk cap/scarf at night or rebraid to maintain the style
How to do Straw set
Things you will need:
A pack of plastic drinking straws. For slightly larger and looser curls, use small perm rods.
Ends paper, bobby pins, setting lotion or gel, light hair oil.

Procedures
1) Shampoo and condition your hair and towel dry.
2) Part you hair into 1/4 to 1/2 inch sections
3) Place end papers on to ends of your hair.
4) Roll your hair onto the straws or perm rods and secure it  with a bobby pin.
5) Repeat steps 2-4 until you have finished your  entire head.
6) Dry your hair under a hooded dryer.
7) Gently remove the straws and separate the curls.
8) Spray with a light oil and continue to spray with oil on a daily basis.

Hope these styles helped you somewhat in your transition phase. Please remember to leave your comments on the blog and subscribe to follow Jungle Barbie.
Happy Friday Barbies and Ken and have a great weekend.

Itchy and scratchy: Oolala my scalp!!!!!

Winter, winter, winter. It doesn’t matter how I wear my hair—loose or loc’d, my scalp become dry due to the cold weather as well as heating because both affect the amount of moisture in your hair and scalp. I needed a solution so, I made a scalp treatment from natural oils. I mixed 5 essential oil (tea tree oil, rosemary oil, virgin coconut oil, Castor oil and olive oil) and applied them to my scalp.

Recipe
The recipe depends on the condition of your scalp.
2 tablespoon virgin coconut oil (main)
1 teaspoon rosemary oil (main)
1 tablespoon tea tree oil (main)
1 tablespoon Castor oil
1 tablespoon olive oil
NB: you don't need to use all the oils you can use one of the main oils and another or 2 main and another. You can mix them however you want just make sure that one of the main oil is in the mix.

Instructions
Mix the oils in a container and massage them into your scalp before bed. I also applied a warm towel to my hair for some moisture. I removed the towel and then applied a little virgin coconut oil to my ends and put on my silk head wrap. This will help to keep in the moisture in your hair. My scalp is now itch free. Yea me!!!!!!!!!!!

Natural oil that are good for the scalp
Virgin Coconut oil: has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antiparasitic properties that can help with many scalp problems such as itchy scalp, dry scalp and dandruff. It can also aid in length retention because it strengthens hair strands and helps to keep them from breaking. Virgin Coconut oil is a great oil to use to soften your hair and condition your scalp.

Jojoba: Is excellent as a scalp moisturizer and helps to rebalance sebum.

Tea Tree: Great for oily hair. Treatment for dry scalp, dandruff, lice, and under active sebaceous glands, enlivens the scalp and brings the cells & follicles to attention.

Peppermint: Great for dry hair. Excellent for dry scalp and promotes hair growth

Lavender: Great for normal hair. Scalp treatment for itchiness, dandruff, and even lice.

Rosemary: Great for oily hair. A dandruff treatment which also promotes hair growth.

Myrrh: Suitable for dry hair. Treatment for dry scalp, dandruff, lice, and under active sebaceous glands

There are many other oils that are great for the scalp. Feel free to experiment with other oils.

If you have a recipe please feel free to share it.

Negativity towards natural Hair

Recently, I have been asked to cut my hair and wear a wig for a particular role in a commercial because my hair did not suit/fit the role that I was selected for. If you know me, I am very passionate about my hair. It was as if  they were saying to me "Synethia, kill yourself".  My hair is a journey between me and my past hairstyles and I have come to the decision that I am secure enough to accept myself and my nappy hair. Lets face it that's the hair we were born with and it sets us apart as black men and women. To take this step, it takes guts and self love. Do you have what it takes?

How do to deal with negativity towards natural hair
1) Be strong and confident:

First and foremost, I think that when a women make the step to go natural or keep their hair natural, they are very strong and there is nothing anyone can say to shatter their confidence. If we can make society wrap us around their peverbial fingers in thinking that our hair in it's natural state is not good enough and we rise above that, then tell me isn't that a strong and confident black woman?

2) Ignore them:
Most times this is the best thing for us to do but I think that if we continue doing it the problem will always arise. I think that we can turn the negative comments into positive ones that can make the person examine themselves.

3) Shoot them:
Sometimes we wish we could shoot some information into the thing they wear under their helmet call the brain. Oh we wish.

4) Laugh hysterically:

We need to thank them for the humor at times because its a pity they don't know that they save themselves from a curse out that would end up not so lovely.

5) Educate them:
This is the most important thing that we can do. If people don't know, we should guide them in the right direction; discussions, websites, blogs, books etc. This leads me to the Method Man video.
In a recent interview with Method Man he was asked "Do you like women with natural hair?"

Method Man responded: “No. I don’t like peasy afros, sorry. I don’t like dreads either. I like a woman to get her hair did.

I don't get mad at people like Method Man. I just look at them in their darkness and feel pity for them. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and preferences but this is share ignorance right here. He needs to educate himself about his own race and embrace his culture.
I will end my rant and leave the blog open for your comments and discussions.
