Causemopolitan: Cosmo mag preaches "Practice Safe Sun"

Someone famous once said that "causes are always cosmopolitan," and a better truism could never, ever be created for us at Cosmopolitan Skin Care. There's nothing we love more than supporting a good cause, especially during this time of the year when extra focus is paid on family, health, and thankfulness for what we do have.

On that note, an extremely "causemopolitan" campaign recently caught my attention...

Flipping through the December 2010 issue of Cosmo magazine, I was surprised to see a 1/3 page advertisement regarding their "Practice Safe Sun" campaign. Now, lord knows I am ALL about sunscreen and sun safety, but this ad especially caught my attention because it seemed so... out of place?

Even though I am surrounded by "safe sun" talk all day, everyday, all year long, winter is not usually the time of year when you see other companies placing much emphasis on skin cancer awareness. Perhaps it was because they didn't sell all of their ad-space, or (more likely, the more I think about it) perhaps they are trying to prevent the surge of tanning bed use that likely does occur in winter, whatever the reason behind the unexpected "safe sun" push might be-- I like it!

Leave it to Cosmopolitan magazine to put sexual innuendo into the name of their skin cancer campaign, but for their brand... it's perfect. The "Practice Safe Sun" campaign was initially started in 2006 to inform and educate their readers of the dangers associated with tanning beds. Almost $40,000 has been raised since November 2010 for the Melanoma Research Foundation, with monies coming from bracelet sales (pictured at right) and reader donations.

Although the campaign has morphed somewhat from just focusing on tanning beds, the official PSS website has lots of great information geared towards Cosmo's target audience; including horror stories of young women dying from skin cancer induced by tanning bed use, top 10 reasons why to never fake & bake again, and exposing the misleading ways some tanning salons try to solicit trust and business.

Cosmo's readers likely do comprise the largest segment of tanning bed users, and the non-judgey advice Cosmopolitan magazine shares here is wonderful for catching their reader's attention, and educating them.

Kudos Cosmopolitan magazine, your cause is perfectly causemopolitan.

(Not to sound like a broken record, but in a nut-shell-- sunscreen needs to be used religiously everyday, year round. For more in-depth information, please feel free to go here, here, here, or even here.)
